Acupuncture for Cancer Support

Having worked as an acupuncturist at Yeleni Therapy and Support: Cancer Charity, and before that the Breast Cancer Haven, I have a special interest in supporting those living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis.

I have completed post graduate training in oncology acupuncture- 50 hours of learning western medical concepts of cancer development, diagnosis and treatment, and the chinese medical view of cancer support. The course also explored the latest research in the field.

There is a significant body of research evidence that supports the use of acupuncture to moderate the side effects of cancer treatment. Acupuncture can be used safely during and after conventional treatment. Conventional treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapies and immunotherapy. The most common side-effects of conventional treatment include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Hot flushes
  • Insomnia
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Neuropathy
  • Dry mouth
  • Pain

Acupuncture is intended to complement standard medical treatment.

Acupuncture takes an holistic approach; each person as an individual. Treatments focus on the mind, body and spirit; one cannot be separated from the others. Therefore, as well as moderating the side-effects of conventional treatment, I also look to improve general health and emotional well-being. It can help you to feel better and so improve your ability to cope with your cancer and treatment.

Transitioning to a new normal

Acupuncture can be very effective in supporting people to deal with the after effects of cancer and its treatment, both physically and emotionally. Many people report that they feel abandoned when they have been given the ‘all clear’ following successful conventional treatment. They feel that they have to ‘slot back’ into their old life and ways of being. Others have reported that they don’t know quite how they should feel. By supporting the mind, body and spirit, acupuncture can help the transition to the new normal.

Please contact me if you would like any further information about how acupuncture could help you. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.
